Challenge: Teach A Child About Food

The adage that “we fear what we don’t know” typifies contemporary notions of food. In such a high-paced society, we demand fast service at restaurants, we briskly eat our food and continue about our day. We need to take the time to teach our children about what is real food, where it comes from and what it is good for. This message, having been repeatedly advocated by the likes of Barbara Kingsolver and Jamie Oliver, is crucial to maintaining the well-being of the next generation.

The truth is that the general public health is now, for the first time in history, declining. This is due, in part, to some socioeconomic factors which have made it so that healthy food is significantly more expensive than unhealthy food. As far as feeble normative statements go, this should not be the case.

This video is about growing your own produce and at the same time teaching our children about where real food comes from. It does not come from shrink wrap, it does not come from supermarkets and it does not come from fast food vendors. Real food comes from the earth.

So here is my challenge: I want you to go out and teach a child something new about food. It can be as easy as a trip to the farmer’s market, watching a movie or a video on the internet, planting your own produce in the comfort of your own home, it can be anything you like.
